S.N.O.B.
1327 Polk St (@ Pine St)
San Francisco, CA
(415) 440 7662

This unassuming Polk Gulch hideaway certainly is big on wine, but thankfully not on attitude.  S.N.O.B. (Sonoma, Napa, or Beyond) sets a very mellow tone wit rich wood elements dominating a space that feels more like a well-appointed country home than a wine bar.  S.N.O.B.’s wine list full of hidden delights certainly is expansive, but the friendly staff is more than happy to offer suggestions.

It’s almost easy to forget that the cuisine at Lettus is healthy.  Snazzy interiors with long narrow panels of reclaimed hickory wood, velvety banquettes, and a long stainless steel bar give Lettus a very ultra-modern feel.  With a long list of credentials (including Personal Chef to George Lucas), Executive Chef Sascha Weiss has created an amazing menu bursting with flavor.  Standouts include their Rice Noodles with mixed vegetables in a coconut lemongrass-lime broth and their Roasted Chicken Breast with fingerling potatoes served with a roasted garlic-thyme sauce.

The late legendary bluesman John Lee Hooker opened up the Boom Boom Room because it was once one of his favorite clubs.  He wanted it to be a down-to-earth hangout spot where people could get together and listen to some live blues – a tradition in the Western Addition area for well over 60 years.  While blues in all its many varieties is still a cornerstone of the Boom Boom Room, Funk, Soul, and R&B are also mainstays.

Club Six tries to bridge the gap between hip lounge & bare bones dance club on two floors.  The main floor is a lounge with space for art gallery shows.  High ceilings, colorful, atmospheric lighting, and vintage couches are a sharp contrast to the dark, expansive basement where some of the best local and international DJs spin serious beats ranging from reggae to breaks & electronica.  House is a big draw here, and no matter who’s spinning, Club Six draws in loads of clubbers looking for some great unpretentious fun.

Ian Schrager took the quiet, refined lounge at the Clift Hotel and updated it to something more reminiscent of New York & LA ultra lounges.  Hip touches like animated art on flat-screen plasma TVs and cushy Philippe Starck-designed couches accent the rich redwood elements.  The centerpiece is a backlit wall behind the bar displaying a vast selection of top shelf liqueurs.  DJs spin trancey and downtempo beats for a nice laid back vibe.

Any Tiki Bar by definition should have a fair amount of kitsch, and The Fairmont’s Tonga Room is bursting at the seams with campy fun.  The usual stuff is here – thatched roof huts, fake palm tress, etc. Tonga Room ups the ante with a happy hour buffet served on the deck of a boat, and isolated “rainstorms” on the lagoon (I kid you not) right by the massive bar.  Oh
