Venue Review: Lumen - Lounge (Chicago, IL)

Recently opened Lumen, is what you get when you cross Al Gore and a lounge. Scared? Don't be. What we're trying to say is that Lumen is one of Chicago's first Green lounge. What makes a lounge Green?

First, we hear from Daily Candy that Lumen utilizes ecologically friendly building materials:

...the green-friendly lounge is built entirely of bamboo, stainless steel, and concrete.

And how about the drinks?

Lumen is already making organic liquor drinkers drool with its organic mixers, garnishes and the organic Snow Queen martini ($9), with organic Snow Queen vodka mixed with muddled fresh organic cucumber and ginger, a squeeze of lemon juice, shaken and served in a chilled martini glass with a cucumber garnish. Although the Snow Queen is the only organic specialty cocktail, vodka-drinkers can order the spirit with simpler drinks like vodka tonics, too. (Center Stage Chicago)

If that weren't enough, we hear they've got a killer LED installation.

Venue Review: The Gage Restaurant & Tavern (Chicago - Illinois)

The Gage, Billy Lawless' new gatro-pub, offers stunning views of Chicago's Millennium Park, along with upscale pub grub, and an extensive liquor selection. About that liquor selection--Daily Candy Chicago reports that the bar will feature over 150 different whiskeys.

For those unfamiliar with the gastro-pub concept (which The Spotted Pig has made famous in New York City), the idea is simple--an unpretentious restaurant that serves inexpensive, gourmet food, which are accompanied by an excellent selection of drinks. The food need not be traditional bar food, but most gastro-pubs offer faithful, yet upscale (and usually great), versions of bar classics like hamburgers and fries. At The Gage, the burgers do not disappoint, nor do the more exotic menu items like the braised rabbit salad.

You can’t come to a city rich in musical history like Chicago and not drop by Buddy Guy’s Legends.  Decorated with an impressive collection of memorabilia like some of Muddy Waters’ Grammys and some of BB King’s and John Lee Hooker’s guitars, Buddy Guy’s Legends has a very raw and dive-y feel. The list of people who have played here reads like a long list of Rock & blues legends like Eric Clapton, David Bowie, and Stevie Ray Vaughn.  The calendar is full of local faves and up-and-comers as well.

It would be impossible to peg this Wicker Park live music institution.  Everything including Techno, Reggae, Heavy Metal, and Bluegrass play here.  Local up and comers to national acts pay their dues here.  Aside from the staggering variety of acts, one of the most stunning things about Double Door is the cleanliness - no sawdust on the floor, broken beer bottles, and puddles of booze.  The downstairs lounge area sports pool tables and video games.

avec
615 W. Randolph St (@ Jefferson St)
Chicago, IL 60661
(312) 377 2002

avec is a interesting blend of a hip, ultra cool wine bar and the warmth and comfort of Mediterranean country food. Crisp clean lines, communal tables and a cedar ceiling accent this swanky hotspot. A respectable list of wines compliments a rustic menu with influences from France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy. Many of the flavorful dishes are prepared with old world authenticity in a wood burning oven and served in cast iron pots. The crispy focaccia with taleggio cheese and truffle oil and the chicken leg panzanella salad are favorites.

Not only is The Green Mill one of the oldest Jazz lounges in the world, it has loads of history in Chicago since prohibition when Al Capone and Charlie Chaplin hung out here.  Precious little has changed since then with a modest stage towards the back and a long list of some of the best bands in Chicago (and that’s saying something).  International Jazz artist play here regularly as well.  The Green Mill features late night weekend jam sessions that keep the place jumpin’ well past 4 am.

Celebrity’s cheeky sense of humor (check out their business cards) pokes a lot of fun at the uber-club scene.  Sure, it’s most definitely a lot more upscale than your average corner bar with lofty open space, a slick, black marble bar, warm, rich reds & orange tones running throughout, and a vibrant paintings.  There are loads of cushy spots, and Celebrity does not require bottle service for a seat.  The kitchen whips out some tasty nouveau American tapas sized dishes, and tha bar stocks everything from Cristal to Colt .45.

Roc Bar

Chicago, IL 60622

Roc Bar takes a plush sexy lounge with red leather banquettes and gives it a strong, edgy rock & roll vibe.  You’re not gonna hear drum& bass, downtempo, or trancey house music at Roc Bar.  Think more along the lines of heavy metal, rap metal, classic, and modern rock.  Then again with backing coming from Disturbed’s lead singer David Draiman, you have to expect something a lot harder than Top 40s.  framed photos of rock stars line the walls, and the bar mixes up a tasty list of specialty cocktails.

Motel Bar

Chicago, IL 60610
(312) 822 2900
website

Instead of following the trend of taking a theme and ramping it up a few notches, the Motel Bar takes the idea of a Hotel Lounge Bar and takes it down a notch.  By no means is the Motel Bar shabby.  Think retro-cool, a lot of comfort, and some plush accents like overstuffed sofas, and cushy banquettes.  Don’t expect fancy signature cocktails, tho’.  While the Motel Bar has a hefty and broad drink menu, they specialize in retro cocktails Sidecars, Gimlets, and Pink Ladies.

Excalibur
632 N. Dearborn St (@ Ontario St)
Chicago, IL 60610
(312) 266 1944

After a lot of Chicago clubs have come and gone, Excalibur still stands as one of the heaviest hitters.  Excalibur offers up a lot of options to the diverse urban/suburban crowds that flock to this former church and one-time home to the Chicago Historical Society.  There are plenty of bars throughout Excalibur, and the first floor lounge has a retro feel with 70’s & 80’s tracks as well as Top 40’s hits.  A lounge has a more downtempo and relaxed vibe.  There’s a downstairs game room with pool tables & arcade games, but the better part of this cavernous space is Club X – the three tiered dance mecca with state of the art audio & lighting systems.
