Would a dive bar still be considered a dive bar if famous people patron it? Bukowski's Tavern ups the anti on dive bars by having it themed after the most notorious pub crawler and literary drunk of modern times, Charles Bukowski. From outside, the bar resembles an old bookstore with neon lights proclaiming “Dead Authors Club,” but nearing the entrance it clearly wasn't a bookstore at all, but the next best thing- a bar with 99 beers on the wall!
Quotes and pictures of the alcoholic writer, along with other counter-culture wordsmiths like Gertrude Stein and Rimbaud, decorate the walls in between the extensive selection of import and American micro-brews. The beer menu, complete with a description of the different beer types, their distinctive taste, and sometimes a bit of their history can be overwhelming, especially at a first glance. If you can’t figure which beer to take down and pass around, the “wheel of indecision” at the bar can help determine your fate. One dollar burgers and other bar grub staples including the “white trash dip” and mac and cheese with andouille will, although very tasty, also determine your fate later in the night.
So no matter how famous or infamous you are, hanging out at a dive bar for too long will always lead you to the same place – the toilet. But its how you get there that makes all the difference.
