Venue Review: Gemma (at The Bowery Hotel) - Restuarant (New York City - NYC)

Back in March we covered the opening of the Bar at the Bowery Hotel. Well, as good as the bar has turned out to be, their Italian restuarant, Gemma, is what everyone has really been waiting to see. As of last week, Gemma is open for previews. If you're not up to date on the long-running hype for Gemma, then check this historical list of posts over at Down By The Hipster.

Back in May, Eater attended a private party, but now they're relaying a report on the public opening:

Popped into Gemma last night about 10pm for a drink. I was blown away. It's absolutely gorgeous. Interior is similar to Morandi but 800 times classier.

They followed up today with some additional reports:

I've seen this food before, at La Bottgea. Not entirely a surprise, I guess, as all the players, John DeLucie, Eric, Sean, are here too. They seem to be rolling with the same "Preview Menu" type thing they did at Waverly. To their credit, prices at this moment are extremely reasonable. Maybe even a steal. The food: Pizzas were acceptable, as were crostinis. The sausage pizza was the standout.

...

Decent food and great atmosphere, without too long a wait for a table.  I'll be back.

More to come...Comment below if you've already been to Gemma.

The Service at Gemma was sooo bad. I had to call the waiter every time and he would never come to the table to see if we needed anything. Then he also left our bottle of wine in the chiller and never refilled our glasses. Anyway the food was good but nothing special.
