Annual CMJ Music Marathon (NYC)
Annual CMJ Music Marathon
October 31 - November 4, 2006

The CMJ Music Marathon rolls into town next week with hundreds of bands performing live in over 50 of New York City's music venues. That’s a lot of bands for five days and if you’re not in the “music biz” you probably didn’t bother to get the $495 pass, which gets you into select shows and all the panel discussions moderated by industry artists like Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Oasis front man Noel Gallagher to name a few.
Now in its 25th year, what’s most notable are not the flock of A&Rs, record execs and music critics debating their top five lists, but all the gigs and “showcases” up and down the metro area from Maxwell’s in Hoboken to Union Hall in Brooklyn.
Major buzz bands like Hot Chip and Tapes ‘n Tapes as well as big guns from yesteryear like George Clinton and Digable Planet secure their spots at seasoned music venues, but the influx of indie and unsigned bands CMJ brings open up clubs that don’t usually book live bands to do so. And that’s what makes CMJ unique- shows where there were none before. Here’s a select list of places and bands in the marathon roster to check out.
Metalchicks at Knitting Factory, Tues 11:45pm
Metal meets dance music by Sugar Yoshinaga (Buffalo Daughter) and Yuka Yoshimura (ex. DMBQ, OOIOO) from Tokyo.
Cassettes Won't Listen at BLVD, Wed 8pm
The indie-rock, electronica madness heard on record is not actually a band, but one dude named Jason Drake. Watch him with an assembly of unknown stars, a strobe light, two turntables & a microphone!
M-1 at Canal Room, Thurs 11:45pm
One half of politically charged hip hop group, Dead Prez, M-1 is just as fierce and on point solo.
Deerhoof at Hiro Ballroom, Fri 8:45pm
Experimentally cuddly and chaotic, this quartet from San Fran plays a blend of noise pop and prog covering hints of every genre from J-pop to thrash in minutes flat.
Women and Children at Hiro Ballroom, Sat 6pm
The group mixes folk, art and rock ‘n roll a la Velvet Underground circa the Nico days.
Bobby Bare Jr. at Mercury Lounge, Sat 10pm
Alt-country rocker, Bobby Bare Jr. revs up country licks with a punk attitude and lots of distortion.
Kayo Dot at Sin-e, Sun 12:30am
Prog-rock metal cacophony with violins from bean town, they should not to be missed.
