Venue Review: Aqua Lounge - Philadelphia

Aqua Lounge
323 W. Girard Ave (@ N. Oriana)
Philadelphia, PA 19123
(215) 769 5114

You could pass by the unassuming façade at Girard & N. Oriana, and not know it’s one of Philly’s best kept secrets.  Inside this intimate lounge, some of Philly’s best DJs come to spin rock solid techno & house beats.  The bartenders are very outgoing and mix some pretty hefty cocktails.  Those in the know flock to Aqua Lounge for a great evening of great dancing with a low-pressure chillout vibe.

Venue Review: 9:30 Club - Washington, DC

9:30 Club
815 V St., NW
Washington, DC 20001
(202) 265 0930
website

The 9:30 Club has a lot of history in the District.  From its humble origins as a dingy yet fiercely loved joint to its current digs by Howard University, the 9:30 Club has been the paragon of diversity in music. In any given month, you’ll find up & comers as well as artists like Fatboy Slim, The Beastie Boys, James Brown, and Tony Bennett.  Acts that normally play arena-sized venues play here because they want to.  The 9:30 Club has a state of the art audio/video system along with a heavy duty ventilation system to constantly pipe in fresh air.  Four bars, a lounge, and all the bells and whistles you’d come to expect from clubs around the world are here.  What you won’t find is loads of attitude.

Venue Review: Gazuza - Lounge - Washington, D.C.

Gazuza
1629 Connecticut Ave, NW
Washington, DC 20009
(202) 667 5500

Gazuza has quickly become one of Dupont Circle’s hottest see and be seen spots.  Sleek, ultra modern décor, ultra friendly staff, and some killer cocktails draw in a hip, mixed crowd of laid back gay & straight urbanites.  In warmer climes, the patio overlooking Connecticut Ave opens up.  The DJs keep the ambient/downtempo beats to a comfortable level for conversations and relaxing.

Venue Review: Boom Boom Room - Club - San Francisco

Boom Boom Room
1601 Filmore St (@ Geary)
San Francisco, CA 94115
(415) 673 8000
website

The late legendary bluesman John Lee Hooker opened up the Boom Boom Room because it was once one of his favorite clubs.  He wanted it to be a down-to-earth hangout spot where people could get together and listen to some live blues – a tradition in the Western Addition area for well over 60 years.  While blues in all its many varieties is still a cornerstone of the Boom Boom Room, Funk, Soul, and R&B are also mainstays.

Venue Review: Martini Ranch - Lounge - Chicago

Martini Ranch
311 W. Chicago Ave
Chicago, IL 60610
(312) 335 9500

Martini Ranch serves up a tasty list of martinis and cocktails in a down-to-earth art deco lounge.  Some of the martinis can be deceptively strong, and there is a small, yet respectable list of imports and domestic microbrews on tap.  The kitchen serves up hearty bar fare until the wee hours.  When things get too thick or if you want a change of pace, the back lounge has a pool table and the comfort of a fireplace.

Venue Review: Club Six - San Francisco

Club Six
60 6th St
San Francisco, CA 94103
(415) 531 6593
website

Club Six tries to bridge the gap between hip lounge & bare bones dance club on two floors.  The main floor is a lounge with space for art gallery shows.  High ceilings, colorful, atmospheric lighting, and vintage couches are a sharp contrast to the dark, expansive basement where some of the best local and international DJs spin serious beats ranging from reggae to breaks & electronica.  House is a big draw here, and no matter who’s spinning, Club Six draws in loads of clubbers looking for some great unpretentious fun.
