Venue Review: Tao - New York City (NYC)

This is by no means a run of the mill “pan-asian” venue. The former art house Plaza Theater in Midtown's East Side has been transformed into something more than a bar and restaurant. The superlative menu reflects influences from China, Japan, Korea, and other corners of Asia. The décor is more like a Zen Buddhist monastery with a monumental Buddha watches over all the gorgeous people wanting to see and be seen. Instead of being sparse and monastic, Tao manages to be open, warm and inviting.
For more info, here's what Digital City and Shecky's had to say.
Anybody been by here lately?

I have eaten at Tao twice. Once two years ago and recently for my sister's birthday. It never disappoints.
Tao is loud, yes. Tao is hectic, definitely. However, that's all part of its charm. It's has a night club feel, but with great food and great service. What could be better?!
I will definitely return with enthusiasm!

Get a life...regarding the use of the budda...it is just for atmosphere...it is not a temple for "gods sake".

I have eaten at TAO's probably 6 or 8 times (my office is down the street) and, from now on, I will avoid it at all cost. Not only is it too loud and not a good value, I am frankly outraged at their use of the Buddha as mere decoration. I find TAO's use of the Buddha holding gambling chips in their recent ads (announcing the opening of their Las Vegas franchise) particularily distasteful and insensitive. Shame on them!
